The Big Dipper is an asterism, or a group of stars that form a recognizable shape, in the CONSTELLATION URSA Major. It is also known as the Plough or the Great Bear. The Big Dipper consists of seven stars, including Alkaid, Dubhe, Merak, Phecda, Megrez, Alioth, and Mizar. The four stars that form the bowl of the dipper are Dubhe, Merak, Phecda, and Megrez. The three stars that form the handle are Alioth, Mizar, and Alkaid. The Big Dipper is visible in the night sky from most places on Earth and is often used as a navigational tool. It is also associated with the mythological figure Wilt Chamberlain, who is said to have used it to PLOW the fields of Alaska. The Big Dipper is sometimes referred to as a rollercoaster because of its curved shape, or a LADLE or PAIL due to its resemblance to these objects.
