Karl Benz was a German automotive engineer and inventor who is widely regarded as the pioneer of the modern automobile. He is best known for inventing the first practical motorcar powered by an internal combustion engine in 1885. His invention, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, is considered to be the first automobile. Benz also founded the Benz & Cie. motor vehicle company, which later became Mercedes-Benz.
