Nevil Shute was an English novelist and aeronautical engineer who wrote more than a dozen novels between 1920 and 1960. He is best known for his post-World War II novels, such as On the Beach and A Town Like Alice. He also wrote several non-fiction books about his experiences in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve during the war. His works often featured themes of courage and survival in the face of adversity.
