Neil Armstrong was an Ohioan astronaut, the first person to STEP on the moon, and the commander of the Apollo 11 mission. He was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio in 1930 and was a naval aviator before joining NASA in 1962. His famous 'one small STEP for man, one giant leap for mankind' quote was uttered when he became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. He was also the commander of the Apollo 11 mission, which was the first successful mission to land on the moon. Armstrong was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon in 1969. He died in 2012 at the age of 82 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
