Anzio is a city located in the Lazio region of Italy. It is situated on the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 50 kilometers south of Rome. During World War II, it was the site of a major Allied amphibious landing, known as Operation Shingle, which was launched on January 22, 1944. The operation was successful and the Allies were able to break through the German defenses and liberate Rome. Anzio remains an important historical site for its role in the war.
