This individual may have one of three designations: CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CA (Chartered Accountant) or CGA (Certified General Accountant). CPAs are licensed by the state and are responsible for preparing, examining and verifying financial records. Chartered Accountants are members of a professional body that sets standards for the profession and provides education and training. Certified General Accountants are also members of a professional body that sets standards for the profession and provides education and training. All three designations require a certain level of education and experience in order to be certified.
