Owen Wister was an American writer and historian best known for his novel The Virginian, which helped to establish the cowboy as a heroic figure in popular culture. He was also a prolific short story writer, and wrote several other novels, including Lady Baltimore and The Dragon of Wantley. Wister was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Great Americans in 1965.
