Tama Janowitz is a writer best known for her novel Slaves of New York, which was adapted into a movie in 1989. She has also written several other novels, short stories, and essays. Janowitz was born in New York City and attended the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop. She has been awarded numerous awards for her writing, including the Pushcart Prize and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
