Ellen Glasgow was an American novelist and playwright from Richmond, Virginia. She wrote about the changing world of the post-Civil War South and was one of the first Southern writers to deal with issues of race and gender. Her most famous works include The Battle-Ground (1902), The Deliverance (1904), and Vein of Iron (1935). She was also a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1942 for her novel In This Our Life.
