Windows Forerunner is a term used to refer to the first operating systems developed by Microsoft. The two most notable of these are DOS (Disk Operating System) and MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System). DOS was the first operating system released by Microsoft in 1981, while MS-DOS was released in 1983. Both of these operating systems were the predecessors of the Windows operating system, which was released in 1985.
