QUAYS are usually built on the edge of a river or harbor, and are used to moor ships. DOCKS are similar to QUAYS, but are usually built in deeper waters and have a greater capacity for larger ships. Piers are long, narrow structures that extend out into the water, and are used to provide access to ships.
