Western settings refer to the American West of the 19th century, a period of rapid expansion and settlement of the area. Forts were military outposts built by the US Army to protect settlers from Native Americans and other threats. Cowtowns were small towns that grew up around cattle ranches and were often wild and lawless places. Sundowns were towns that enforced segregation laws, forbidding African Americans from entering after dark.
