The Virginia Settlement, First English was Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. Established in 1607, it was located on the banks of the James River in the Virginia Colony. Jamestown was the first successful English settlement in the New World and served as the capital of the Virginia Colony for over 80 years. It was the site of the first representative government in the Americas and the first African slaves were brought to the settlement in 1619.
