Nat Turner was an African-American slave who led a rebellion in 1831. He was born into slavery in Southampton County, Virginia and was a literate preacher. He was inspired by the Second Great Awakening, a religious revival movement, to lead a slave revolt in order to free his people from bondage. The revolt was unsuccessful and resulted in the deaths of many slaves and white people. Turner was eventually captured and executed for his actions.
