Nat Turner was an African-American slave who led a rebellion in 1831 in Southampton County, Virginia. He was a preacher and a literate slave who had been exposed to the Bible and was deeply religious. Turner's rebellion was the most significant slave uprising in the United States and it resulted in the death of 55 white people and the execution of Turner and his followers.
