Ice is a common treatment for swelling. It helps reduce inflammation and pain by constricting the blood vessels and numbing the area. ICE can be applied directly to the skin or wrapped in a cloth and applied to the affected area. It should be used for no more than 20 minutes at a time and should not be applied directly to the skin for more than 10 minutes. ICE should not be used on open wounds or on areas with poor circulation.
