A tragic heroine is a female protagonist in a story who experiences great suffering and ultimately has a tragic ending. Two examples of tragic heroines are Mimi from the opera La Boheme and Ophelia from the play Hamlet. Mimi is a poor seamstress who falls in love with a poet, but eventually dies of tuberculosis. Ophelia is a young woman who is manipulated by her father and her lover, and eventually drowns herself in a river. Both characters are examples of tragic heroines who suffer greatly and have a tragic end.
