Torquato Tasso was an Italian poet from the 16th century. He is best known for his epic poem 'Gerusalemme Liberata' which tells the story of the First Crusade. He was also a courtier and a soldier, and was highly regarded by the Italian nobility. He was born in Sorrento in 1544 and died in Rome in 1595.
