Tokyo's old name was EDO and Yedo. EDO was the name of the city from 1603 to 1868, when it was the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate, a feudal military government. Yedo was the name used for the city from 1868 to 1869, when the shogunate was abolished and the emperor was restored to power.
