Thimble Theatre was a comic strip created by Elzie Crisler Segar in 1919. The main character of the strip was Popeye, a sailor who gained superhuman strength from eating spinach. Other characters included Olive Oyl, Popeye's girlfriend; Bluto, Popeye's rival; and Oyl, Olive Oyl's brother. Oyl was a tall, thin man with a large nose and a penchant for getting into trouble. Bluto was a brutish bully who often tried to steal Olive Oyl away from Popeye. Olive Oyl was a tall, thin woman with a long neck and a sharp tongue. She was often the voice of reason in the strip.
