Upton Sinclair was an American novelist, playwright, and political activist who wrote the 1906 novel The Jungle. The novel exposed the harsh conditions of the meatpacking industry in the United States and was a major influence on the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. He was also a vocal advocate for socialism and wrote many other novels, plays, and non-fiction works.
