The Giving Tree Writer Silverstein is the pen name of American poet, author, and cartoonist Shel Silverstein. He is best known for his children's books, which include The Giving Tree, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and A Light in the Attic. Silverstein was also a songwriter, playwright, and screenwriter. He wrote songs for artists such as Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show.
