Althea Gibson was an American tennis player who was the first African American to win a Grand Slam title in 1956. She won both the French Open and Wimbledon that year, becoming the first black athlete to win a major tournament. She was also the first black player to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1971.
