Tarte Tatin, also known as Upside-Down Apple Tart, is a French pastry made by baking apples in a caramelized sugar and butter mixture, then flipping the tart over to serve. It was created in 1889 by the Tatin sisters, who ran a hotel in Lamotte-Beuvron, France. The pastry is made with a shortcrust pastry base, topped with apples that are cooked in butter and sugar until they caramelize. The tart is then flipped over to reveal the caramelized apples on top.
