Tasmania's capital is Hobart, a city of approximately 225, 000 people located on the Derwent River in the south-east of the island state. It is Australia's second oldest capital city after Sydney and was founded in 1804. The city is known for its Georgian architecture, which dates back to the early 19th century. It is also home to the Museum of Old and New Art, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, and the Salamanca Market.
