Tailors' measurements are an important part of the tailoring process. Waists, which are measured in six letters, refer to the circumference of the body at its narrowest point, usually just above the navel. Inseams, which are measured in seven letters, refer to the length of the inner leg seam from the crotch to the bottom of the leg. Together, these measurements are used to create custom-fitted clothing.
