Statesman Henry CLAY was an American politician and lawyer who served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. He was a leader of the Whig Party and is best known for his role in crafting the Missouri Compromise of 1820. CLAY also served as Secretary of State under President John Quincy Adams from 1825 to 1829. He was a major figure in American politics during the first half of the 19th century and was nicknamed 'The Great Compromiser' for his ability to bring opposing sides together.
