The term 'State Mormon' refers to the state of Utah, which is home to a large population of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Utah was admitted to the Union in 1896 as the 45th state and is the only state with a majority population of members of the LDS Church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith and is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.
