A Spartan slave was known as a HELOT. Helots were enslaved people in ancient Sparta, a city-state in Greece. They were mostly of the Messenian origin and were used as agricultural laborers and serfs. They were also required to pay a portion of their produce to the Spartan state. Helots were not allowed to own land or weapons and were subject to harsh punishments if they disobeyed the laws of Sparta.
