The Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, SPUTNIK, in 1957. This marked the beginning of the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Soviets continued to launch satellites throughout the Cold War, including the Mir space station in 1986. Mir was the first modular space station and remained in orbit until 2001. Both SPUTNIK and Mir were important milestones in the history of space exploration.
