The term Soviet Detention Camp is often referred to as a GULAG, which is an acronym for the Russian phrase 'Glavnoye Upravleniye Ispravitelno-Trudovykh Lagerey' which translates to 'Main Administration of Corrective Labor Camps'. The GULAG was a system of labor camps established by the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1956 in order to detain and punish political prisoners.
