A sonnet is a type of poem that consists of fourteen lines. It is typically written in iambic pentameter, which is a poetic meter consisting of five feet of two syllables each, with the first syllable unstressed and the second syllable stressed. The sonnet is divided into two parts: the OCTET, which consists of eight lines, and the sestet, which consists of six lines. The OCTET is further divided into two quatrains, or four-line stanzas, and the sestet is divided into a TERCET, or three-line stanza, and a couplet, or two-line stanza. The OCTET and sestet are also known as an octave and sestet, respectively. The OCTET and sestet are connected by a volta, or turn, which marks a change in the poem's subject matter.
