A SATRAP is a ruler of a province in ancient Persia, often referred to as a small-time dictator. The term is derived from the Old Persian word for 'protector of the realm'. Satraps were appointed by the king and had absolute authority over their provinces, although they were expected to remain loyal to the king and follow his orders. They were also responsible for collecting taxes and maintaining order in their provinces.
