The Small Merganser is a species of duck, also known as the SMEW, which is native to Eurasia. It is a small duck, with males having a distinctive white and black plumage, and females being brown and grey. The SMEW is a diving duck, and feeds mainly on fish, although it will also eat insects and crustaceans. It is a migratory species, breeding in northern Europe and Asia, and wintering in southern Europe and Africa.
