Sir ALEC Guinness was an English actor who is best known for his roles in the films 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' and 'Lawrence of Arabia'. He was knighted in 1959 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1979. He was also a recipient of the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the Academy Award for Best Actor. Sir ALEC Guinness was also known for his stage performances, including his role as John Worthing in the play 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.
