Sharpening bands, also known as strops, are leather or canvas belts used to sharpen knives and other tools. They are usually impregnated with abrasive compounds such as diamond dust, chromium oxide, or honing compound. The sharpening band is attached to a handle and the blade is drawn across the surface of the belt in a back-and-forth motion. This process removes metal from the blade and creates a sharp edge.
