Sergeant ALVIN York was an American World War I hero who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery in battle. He was born in Tennessee in 1887 and was a conscientious objector to war before being drafted in 1917. During the Battle of the Argonne Forest, he single-handedly killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 more. His actions were credited with helping to turn the tide of the war and he was celebrated as a national hero upon his return to the United States.
