Ava DuVernay is an American filmmaker, producer, and director. She is best known for directing the 2014 historical drama film Selma, which was based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches. The film was nominated for Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards, making DuVernay the first African-American woman to be nominated for Best Director. She has since gone on to direct other films such as A Wrinkle in Time and 13th.
