Scottish explorer John Rae was a 19th century explorer who is best known for his exploration of the Arctic. He was born in Orkney, Scotland in 1813 and worked as a medical officer for the Hudson's Bay Company. He explored much of the Canadian Arctic and discovered the final link in the Northwest Passage. He also surveyed parts of the Arctic coast of Canada and Alaska. His most famous accomplishment was the discovery of the fate of the Franklin Expedition, which had disappeared in 1845.
