Juan is a reference to Juan Capistrano, a Spanish Franciscan friar who founded Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776. The mission was the seventh of twenty-one missions established in California by the Spanish Empire. It was named after Saint John of Capistrano, a 14th-century theologian and warrior from Italy. The mission was the site of the first vineyard in California and is now a popular tourist destination.
