Sacrifice hit' is a baseball term used to describe a play in which the batter attempts to advance a runner on base by hitting a ball that is not intended to be a hit. The batter will usually try to hit the ball softly and in a way that it will be difficult for the defense to field. A successful sacrifice hit will result in the runner advancing to the next base, even if the batter is thrown out at first.
