Ostia was the ancient port of Rome, located at the mouth of the Tiber River. It was a major trading hub for the Roman Empire and was the main port of entry for goods coming into Rome. Ostia was also an important naval base and was home to many of Rome's most important naval fleets. The city was eventually abandoned in the 5th century AD due to silting of the harbor.
