A river dam is a structure built across a river to control the flow of water. A WEIR is a type of river dam that is used to raise the level of water upstream, often for the purpose of providing a head of water for a mill or other industrial process. Weirs are typically made of concrete or stone and are designed to allow water to flow over the top of the structure, while still controlling the flow of water downstream.
