The Sepoy Rebellion of 1857-59 was a major uprising in India against the British East India Company. It was led by Indian soldiers, known as sepoys, who were employed by the company. The rebellion began when sepoys refused to use new cartridges that were rumored to be greased with animal fat, which was offensive to both Hindus and Muslims. The rebellion quickly spread throughout India and was eventually suppressed by the British.
