Alexia is a neurological disorder characterized by an inability to read, despite having normal vision and intelligence. It is also known as word blindness or visual word-form agnosia. People with alexia may be able to recognize individual letters, but are unable to comprehend words or sentences. It is usually caused by damage to the left occipital-temporal region of the brain, which is responsible for processing written language.
