Ava DuVernay is an American filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter best known for creating the television series Queen Sugar. She is the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Director and the first black female director to have her film nominated for an Academy Award. DuVernay has also directed several documentaries, including 13th, which won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.
