Quarterback Dan is a reference to the former American football quarterback Dan Marino, who played for the Miami Dolphins from 1983 to 1999. He was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times and was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1984. Marino holds numerous NFL records, including most passing yards, most touchdown passes, and most completions. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
