Prison uprisings, also known as prison riots, are events in which inmates of a prison or correctional facility take control of the facility and resist authority. These events often involve violence, destruction of property, and sometimes even death. The term 'RIOT' is used to describe large-scale uprisings, while smaller-scale disturbances are referred to as 'disturbances' or 'uprisings'. The most common cause of prison uprisings is overcrowding, but other factors such as poor living conditions, inadequate medical care, and lack of access to education can also contribute to unrest.
