William Howard Taft was the 27th President of the United States and the 10th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He was the only person to have held both offices. Taft served as President from 1909 to 1913 and as Chief Justice from 1921 to 1930. He was known for his progressive domestic policies, which included trust busting and tariff reduction. He also presided over the creation of the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Labor. As Chief Justice, Taft was a strong advocate of judicial restraint and wrote several important opinions, including one that upheld the constitutionality of the income tax.
