The fourth President of the United States was James K. Polk, who served from 1845 to 1849. He succeeded John Tyler, who had been the tenth President of the United States. Polk was a Democrat and is remembered for his expansionist foreign policy, which included the annexation of Texas and the Oregon Territory. He also oversaw the Mexican-American War, which resulted in the acquisition of California and other territories.
